DMP arrests 504 in 24-hour drive across Dhaka

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 504 people in a 24-hour crime-control operation across the capital, recovering large quantities of narcotics, ammunition, local weapons and other items, police said Sunday (August 9).

The arrests came as police filed 35 cases at different police stations during the operation, according to the DMP Media and Public Relations Division.

The Mirpur division recorded the highest number of arrests, with 144 people detained. Police also arrested 72 in Motijheel, 66 in Tejgaon, 55 in Wari, 47 in Gulshan, 40 in Uttara, 39 in Lalbagh and 34 in Ramna. The Detective Branch arrested seven more.

Among the seized narcotics were 29.95 kilograms of cannabis, 225 yaba tablets, 35 grams of heroin and 48 bottles of Eskaf syrup, which police identified as a codeine-based cough syrup commonly associated with illicit drug use. Officers also recovered Tk8,750 allegedly linked to drug sales.

Police said the operation also yielded 22 rounds of live shotgun cartridges, a knife, a switchgear, a hacksaw blade, scissors and an electric shock device.

Other recovered items included a water pump, five mobile phones, a wallet, three pieces of foil paper, a gas lighter and a Tk10 banknote.

The DMP said the arrests were part of its continuing drive against narcotics and other criminal activities in different parts of the capital.

Legal proceedings against those arrested are underway, police said.
