DMP commissioner expresses regret over controversial remarks on 'rape'
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali has issued an apology following widespread criticism of his recent comments regarding rape. The controversy arose after the commissioner suggested using alternative terms for "rape" during a public event, stating that the word sounded "unpleasant."
In an official statement released on Monday, the DMP Commissioner clarified his position, saying, "While discussing violence against women and children, I mentioned rape as part of a broader context of abuse. If my remarks have caused hurt or distress to anyone, I sincerely regret it." The statement was signed by Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) of the DMP.
The backlash began after Commissioner Sajjat Ali, speaking at an event on Saturday, urged the media to avoid using the term "rape." He said, "I strongly dislike the word 'rape.' I request you not to use it. Instead, use terms like 'violence against women' or 'repression of women.' Even the law is titled the 'Women and Children Repression (Prevention) Act.' Let's avoid words that sound unpleasant."
His comments sparked widespread criticism from activists, civil society members, and the general public, who argued that such remarks could undermine the seriousness of the crime and discourage survivors from seeking justice.
