DMP commissioner urges media to use 'violence against women' instead of 'rape'
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali has requested the media to use the term "violence against women" instead of "rape" in their reporting.
He made this request while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the "Help" app, designed to enhance women's safety in public transport. The event took place on Saturday at the Daily Star building on Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue in Dhaka.
The app-based service has been jointly launched by the Broadcast Journalists Centre (BJC) and Switch Bangladesh Foundation.
Sajjat Ali said, "There are two words I strongly dislike, one of which is rape. I kindly request everyone to avoid using this term. Instead, please use 'violence against women' or 'women's oppression.' Our laws also refer to it as 'violence against women and children.' Let's refrain from using words that sound unpleasant."
The DMP Commissioner also requested the media to limit coverage of incidents that may cause public panic or fear. He added, "While this is part of your professional duty, presenting it in a more reasonable manner would be better."
