DMP explains alleged traffic rule violation by Police Commissioner
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has issued an official clarification following allegations that Police Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed's motorcade violated traffic regulations shortly after he stated that traffic laws apply equally to everyone.
In a statement released on Thursday night (June 5), the DMP described media reports on the incident as “misleading, incomplete, and not reflective of the actual situation.”
According to the police, the section of Minto Road where the incident occurred is not a one-way street but a two-way road. The DMP said an experimental traffic management arrangement involving plastic barriers and a temporary U-turn facility had been introduced there, which does not constitute a permanent traffic restriction.
The statement noted that the barriers are routinely opened and closed as part of ongoing traffic management measures. Therefore, the allegation that the commissioner’s motorcade violated traffic rules by using the route is inaccurate.
The DMP further said the movement of the commissioner’s convoy took place under the supervision and guidance of traffic officials and did not involve any special privilege or breach of traffic regulations.
Rejecting claims that a route closed to the general public was opened exclusively for the commissioner’s motorcade, the police said such portrayals do not accurately reflect the reality on the ground.
The DMP also urged media outlets to verify information thoroughly before publishing reports, emphasising the important role of responsible journalism in shaping public opinion.
