DMP regrets baton charge on engineering students

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has expressed regret over the baton charge on engineering students in front of the Intercontinental Hotel.

DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjad ​​Ali, who arrived at Shahbagh intersection around 10pm on Wednesday, spoke to the students and announced the formation of an investigation committee on Thursday in the incident.

However, the students expressed anger over the commissioner's statement. They demanded the expulsion of Shahbagh Division DC Masud.

Earlier in the day, engineering students took up positions in Shahbagh as part of a pre-announced programme around 11 am. They started a 'Long March to Dhaka' with three-point demands, but were stopped by the police at afternoon. During this, there was a chase and counter-chase between the police and the students. Police threw hurled teargas and sound grenades while students threw brickchips. Many people from both sides were injured the incident.

After the incident, the students are continuing their movement by blocking the road in front of the Intercontinental Hotel. Shahbagh Police Station OC Khalid Mansur said that traffic has been stopped due to the movement. To avoid suffering, alternative roads are being used at Katabon, Matsya Bhaban and Intercontinental intersection.

The students claim that at least 50-60 people were injured in the police attack. On the other hand, the police claim that some policemen were also injured when the students threw bricks.
