DMP to lead coordinated security drive at National Eidgah Maidan: Commissioner
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has confirmed comprehensive security arrangements around the National Eidgah Maidan ahead of Eid prayers, assuring no compromise on public safety.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday (March 19), DMP Commissioner Md. Sarwar said intelligence agencies are monitoring the situation, and all measures are in place to ensure a secure environment. “The city police, in coordination with other law enforcement agencies, have implemented multiple layers of security,” he added.
Access to the Eidgah will be strictly controlled through archways and metal detectors, while CCTV cameras and watchtowers will provide continuous surveillance. Road barricades will be set up at three main entry points—Matsya Bhaban, Press Club, and Shikkhabhavan crossings—to prevent unauthorized vehicles from entering nearby roads.
Commissioner Sarwar said special arrangements are in place for female worshippers, including separate entry gates and security checks. Similar measures will also be implemented at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
To facilitate smooth traffic flow, diversions will be enforced at key points, including Zero Point Crossing, Government Employees Hospital, High Court Crossing, Press Club Link Road, Ministry of Foreign Affairs rear lane, Paltan Crossing, Police Control Room gap, and Matsya Bhaban Crossing. Pedestrians will be able to access the Eidgah on foot, but no vehicles will be allowed in the vicinity.
Designated parking areas include the front and inner premises of the Public Works Department building, IEB building, roads on both sides of UBL, southwest side of Doel Chattar, from Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall to Bangabazar Hawkers Market Crossing, and both sides of the road near Carpet Gali Road and Shahbagh Crossing. Reserved parking is available for government officials, prominent citizens, and journalists.
The DMP Commissioner urged worshippers not to bring bags, sharp objects, or any suspicious items into the Eidgah. He also asked citizens to report any unusual activity to nearby police or call the 999 emergency hotline and to leave the premises in an orderly manner after prayers.
