DMP to monitor World Cup screenings on big screens
Police have decided to conduct special surveillance at locations where football World Cup matches are being screened on big screens across Dhaka to ensure that fans' enthusiasm does not turn into violence. The Detective Branch (DB) and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) will be responsible for this duty, DB Additional Police Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam said on Friday, July 3.
Speaking at a briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Mintoo Road, he said, "World Cup matches are being screened at various locations in the capital. All DMP police stations have been instructed to identify where such screenings are taking place and maintain contact with the organisers. Both police and DB members will be deployed there to prevent any untoward incidents."
Addressing the city residents, the officer said, "Let joy remain within joy, and not turn into sorrow. Wins and losses are part of the game. Celebrate your team's victory, but be tolerant of others' opinions and support."
The briefing was organised to provide updates on the investigation into the murder of BNP leader Md Abul Bashar Badsha in Adabar on Wednesday.
Police said on Monday night, a group of youths were playing drums and whistles while watching and celebrating Brazil's World Cup match. A man named Habib allegedly beat a youth named Nirob over the incident. The dispute escalated, leading to the hacking death of Abul Bashar Badsha on Wednesday night.
Police arrested Nirob, Ripon, Majnu and Mizanur Rahman from Mymensingh on Thursday for their alleged involvement in the murder.
Shafiqul Islam said preliminary investigation showed that Ripon was the one who stabbed Badsha. The knife used in the murder has been recovered.
Police said Ripon and Nirob are brothers, and Majnu is their father.
The local BNP unit president injured in the attack is still undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital's ICU.
