Doctor dies of dengue before taking charge at hospital’s dengue unit

A doctor at Mugda Medical College Hospital has died of dengue, just a day before she was due to take charge at the hospital’s dengue unit.

Dr Achol Roy, an assistant registrar in the hospital’s Medicine Department and a 42nd BCS cadre officer, died while undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of Square Hospital in Dhaka on Sunday (September 27).

Roy had treated patients at Mugda Medical College Hospital on Saturday, the day before her death. She was scheduled to begin duties at the dengue unit the following day but died before taking up the assignment.

Her death has prompted an outpouring of grief among fellow 42nd BCS officers and members of the medical community, with colleagues expressing condolences on social media.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services, Bangladesh recorded 71,536 dengue cases and 214 deaths as of September 26. September alone accounted for 35,690 cases, the highest monthly total so far this year.

Men accounted for 62 percent of reported dengue cases this year, while women made up 38 percent. Among the deaths, 52.6 percent were men and 47.4 percent women.
