Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has received a formal letter from British MP Tulip Siddiq, who is also the niece of Sheikh Hasina, seeking a meeting during his ongoing visit to the United Kingdom.

The confirmation was made by Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, at a press briefing held Tuesday at the Bangladesh High Commission in London.

Speaking to reporters, Shafiqul said, “We can confirm that a letter has been received. Any response will be made through the appropriate legal channels. This is a legal matter and will be treated accordingly.”

In her letter, Siddiq invited Dr Yunus to a meeting over lunch or afternoon tea at the House of Commons, expressing a desire to address and clarify what she described as “misunderstandings” surrounding recent corruption allegations.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Bangladesh last week alleged that Tulip—or her mother—had improperly benefited from a 7,200-square-foot land allotment granted during Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year tenure as prime minister.

Reports of the letter first surfaced in Bangladeshi media outlets on Sunday, just a day before Dr Yunus commenced his four-day official trip to the UK. Initially, Shafiqul had stated that no official communication had been received. However, later that day, The Guardian reported that Tulip had formally reached out to the Chief Adviser’s office.

Dr Yunus, who is leading the caretaker government following the removal of the Hasina administration, is currently engaged in meetings with British officials and the Bangladeshi diaspora in London.
