Driver involved in Monday's Banani accident arrested

The driver of the pickup truck that ran over two female garment workers in Banani’s Chairmanbari area, Mohammad Titon Islam, has been arrested by Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Detective Branch (DB).

Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Talebur Rahman of DMP's Media and Public Relations Branch confirmed the arrest of the reckless truck driver involved in the road accident on Monday night (March 10).

Meanwhile, in a letter signed by Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Deputy Director (Engineering) Mohammad Sanaul Haque, it was announced that the registration of the vehicle involved in the accident has been temporarily suspended by the BRTA. This action has been taken as per the the Road Transport Rules, 2022.

Yesterday morning, while on her way to work in the Chairmanbari area, a garment worker named Minara Akter (19) was killed after being run over by a pickup truck. Another garment worker, Sumaiya Akter (19), was critically injured in the accident.

In protest of the accident, garment workers blocked both sides of the road in Banani. They also halted traffic on the Elevated Expressway, causing severe traffic congestion in Banani and surrounding areas. After blocking the roads for nearly five hours, the workers cleared the way, and traffic returned to normal.
