The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has taken a strict stance against driving without a licence or operating a vehicle of a category different from the one mentioned on the licence. The authority has said such offences will lead to imprisonment and fines.

The warning was issued in an emergency notification from the BRTA headquarters on Friday, April 3.

The notification stated that under section 4(1) of the Road Transport Act 2018, no person may drive or allow another person to drive a motor vehicle in public without a valid driving licence, learner's licence or renewed licence.

Additionally, under section 4(2), driving any type of vehicle other than the category specified on the licence is completely prohibited. Under section 5(1), no person may drive or allow another to drive a public transport vehicle without proper authorisation.

Violation of the law may result in up to six months imprisonment, a fine of up to Tk 25,000, or both, under section 66 of the Road Transport Act 2018.

BRTA also said the driving licence of the offender may be suspended or cancelled. There is also provision for licence cancellation if a person is found physically or mentally unfit.

The authority noted that unlicensed driving, use of wrong category vehicles, reckless speeding and chaotic driving have recently increased road accidents, raising the risk of fatalities and serious injuries.

Drivers have been urged to use valid licences and follow the specified categories. Transport owners have also been instructed to remain aware and responsible regarding their drivers.

The notification warned that strict legal action would be taken against drivers and owners who violate the directives.
