DRU condemns attack on journalists at court

Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) has strongly condemned and protested the assault and harassment of journalists by lawyers at a court in Dhaka.

On Thursday (September 4), DRU member Moktadir Rashid Romeo and journalist Asif Mohammad Siam were attacked and harassed by lawyers at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

In a joint statement issued on Friday (September 5), DRU President Abu Saleh Akon and General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohel condemned the incident.

They said incidents of attacks on journalists while performing professional duties are on the rise, posing a serious threat to independent journalism. They noted that similar attacks have taken place in court premises in the past, and if justice had been ensured then, such incidents would not be recurring.

The DRU leaders urged law enforcement agencies to be more proactive in preventing such assaults and ensuring punishment for those responsible. They also demanded that the attackers be identified quickly through video footage analysis and brought to justice.
