The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has officially concluded the cleanup of sacrificial animal waste following Eid-ul-Azha.

DSCC Administrator Md. Shahjahan Mia made the announcement on Monday (June 9) during a press conference at the WASA building in the capital.

He said, “On the first and second days of Eid, 100% of the sacrificial waste was removed from all 75 wards under DSCC. By 2:45pm on the third day (Monday), a total of 31,226 metric tons of waste had been removed. This year, our target was 30,000 metric tons, which we exceeded ahead of schedule.”

He also mentioned that the removal of bamboo poles, floating waste, and scattered garbage from DSCC’s eight temporary cattle markets is nearly complete.

He said, “This year, a total of 166,754 animals were sacrificed under DSCC. Of these, 133,317 were sacrificed on the first day, 31,745 on the second day, and 1,692 on the third day.”

A total of 12,853 workers took part in the waste management effort. For waste removal, 2,079 vehicles of various sizes and 344 machines were used. Activities at the markets and waste disposal sites were monitored through CCTV and direct supervision from the control room at Nagar Bhaban. Each cattle market had its own control room, monitoring team, and mobile court led by an executive magistrate. For security, 400 Ansar-VDP members were deployed across the eight markets.

As part of public hygiene efforts, DSCC distributed 45 tons of bleaching powder, 207 gallons of disinfectant (each gallon containing 5 liters), and 140,000 biodegradable bags to city residents.

DSCC Secretary Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Md. Mahbubur Rahman Talukder, and other senior officials were also present at the press conference.
