DU student beaten during anti-drug drive, DUCSU protests
Allegations have surfaced that a Dhaka University student and left-wing student leader was beaten by police during an anti-drug operation in Suhrawardy Udyan. Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) has expressed concern and protest, demanding legal action against those involved.
The demand was made in a press release sent to media on Tuesday, February 24.
In the release signed by DUCSU Executive Member Hema Chakma, it was alleged that law enforcement agency Bangladesh Police attacked DU student and Revolutionary Student Youth Movement Vice President Nayem Uddin without any evidence. It was alleged that the incident occurred under the direction of DC Masud.
The release strongly condemned the attempt to portray an ordinary citizen as a criminal without proof. Allegations were also made that creating terror in the name of police undermines citizens' fundamental right to free movement. DUCSU described the physical assault without legal cause as a human rights violation.
Drawing the Home Ministry's attention, the release demanded immediate departmental and legal action against DC Masud and all police personnel involved. It also called for effective measures to genuinely transform the police force into a friend of the people.
No formal statement from police regarding the incident was immediately available.
