The body of a Dhaka University (DU) student was recovered from his rented flat on Moneshwar Road in the capital's Hazaribagh.

The deceased was identified as Simanto, 25, a final-year Chemistry student at the university. He was the son of Sadrul Amin, a resident of Birgaon village at Monohardi in Narsingdi.

According to police, Simanto was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 1:30am on Thursday in an unconscious state, where on-duty doctors declared him dead.

His uncle, Ruhul Amin, said Simanto had locked himself in his room after 9:00pm the previous night. Concerned by the silence, the landlord broke the door and found him unconscious.

Ruhul Amin added that a strong smell of toxic substance was detected when Simanto was taken to the hospital, leading the family to suspect suicide, although the motive remains unknown.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp in-charge Inspector Md. Faruk confirmed the death. The body has been kept at the hospital morgue, and Hazaribagh Police Station has been informed for further investigation.
