DU teacher Sudip Chakraborty arrested over student's suicide

Police have arrested Sudip Chakraborty, an associate professor of the Theatre and Performance Studies Department at Dhaka University, in connection with the suicide of student Munira Mahzabin Mimo . The arrest followed a case filed by Mimo's father at Badda Police Station, accusing the teacher of abetting the suicide.

Mimo, an MA student of the 2019-20 academic session, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her Badda residence early on Sunday, April 26 . Family members broke down the door after receiving no response.

A suicide note recovered from the scene reportedly mentioned Chakraborty and another student, Umme Hani, with references to financial transactions . Police also noted a six-minute phone call between Mimo and Chakraborty around 1:00 am on Sunday, which the teacher allegedly deleted from his call history.

Chakraborty has been arrested and produced in court . Umme Hani was also detained for questioning but was released on a bond after preliminary interrogation found no direct involvement.

Department Chairperson Kazi Tamanna Haque Sigma expressed deep shock over Mimo's death and confirmed that teachers rushed to the residence upon hearing the news . An autopsy has been conducted at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
