DUCSU VP candidate Jalal expelled from hall over roommate stabbing
Jalal Ahmad Jalal, an independent candidate for Vice President in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election and a student of the Television and Film Department, has been expelled from Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall for allegedly stabbing his roommate.
The hall principal, Dr Md Sirajul Islam, announced the expulsion around 1:00am on Wednesday (August 27). He said, “He has been expelled from the hall for this violent act. His student status will also be revoked, and a case will be filed against him at Ramna Police Station.”
Earlier, around 12:30am, Jalal stabbed his roommate Robiul Haque, a 2018-19 batch student of the Political Science Department, in room 462 of Mohsin Hall. Robiul is seriously injured and is currently receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
According to eyewitnesses, the stabbing took place following a prolonged argument between the roommates. After the incident, the university administration handed Jalal over to the police.
University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said, “Legal action will be taken against Jalal Ahmad in accordance with the law. This incident will not impact the upcoming DUCSU elections.”
Addressing earlier allegations against Jalal, the proctor added, “I am unable to comment right now on what actions the administration has taken. However, following today’s incident, all related matters will be thoroughly reviewed.”
Meanwhile, many students have demanded the resignation of the provost of Mohsin Hall following the incident. The proctor said, “I have also seen students demanding the provost’s resignation. If they formally present their demands to the Vice-Chancellor in a meeting on Wednesday, appropriate action will be taken regarding their demands.”
