Sharadiya Durga Puja officially begins today with the Bodhon ritual, marking the ceremonial invocation of Goddess Durga. The main festivities will commence tomorrow (Sunday) with Maha Shasthi.

Temples and puja mondops across Dhaka and the country are adorned with idols, lights, and traditional decorations, creating a vibrant festive atmosphere. Devotees are gathering amid sounds of drums, incense, and religious chants.

According to Hindu tradition, Bodhon symbolises awakening the goddess.

Mythology suggests that Lord Rama worshipped Durga during autumn—an untimely season for the ritual—prior to his battle with Ravana, hence the term Akaal Bodhon.

This year, the ritual is being held on the evening of Panchami due to the absence of an auspicious time during Shasthi evening, as per the lunar calendar.

Scriptures indicate that this year Durga arrives on a gaja (elephant), symbolising prosperity and peace, but her departure will be on a dola (palanquin), which suggests transition and uncertainty.

The main puja will continue with Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami, Maha Navami, and end with idol immersion on Vijaya Dashami.

In Dhaka, 259 puja mondops have been set up—7 more than last year. Nationwide, the number stands at 33,355, an increase of nearly 1,000.

Police and local administrations have implemented strict security measures across the country, while puja committees and volunteers are working to ensure a peaceful and joyous celebration.
