Durga Puja security assured amid rumor threats: Home Adviser
Home Affairs Adviser Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has assured that Durga Puja celebrations will proceed peacefully across the country, with no security concerns. However, he warned that neighboring countries and fascist collaborators may attempt to spread rumors to disrupt communal harmony.
Speaking to reporters after a core committee meeting at the Secretariat on Sunday, Chowdhury said, “There is no reason for concern regarding Puja. But false information may be circulated on social media by external and fascist-linked groups. We must counter misinformation and ensure the public receives accurate updates.”
To ensure nationwide security during the festivities, over 100,000 armed forces personnel will be deployed, alongside 70,000 police officers and 430 platoons. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and other agencies will also be active, with additional volunteers mobilized by the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs.
Chowdhury emphasized that any attempt to spread rumors or incite communal unrest will be met with strict action.
Regarding the upcoming national election, he noted that Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has indicated a February timeline, despite currently being abroad. “The ministry is preparing accordingly,” he added.
On the recent unrest in Khagrachhari, Chowdhury confirmed that Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Adviser Supradeep Chakma has initiated discussions with all concerned parties.
