Earthquake claims life of newborn, injures 2 in Narayanganj
A newborn was killed when a wall collapsed during Friday’s 5.7-magnitude earthquake at Rupganj in Narayanganj.
The incident took place around 10:30am in Islambagh under Golakandail Union.
The deceased was identified as Fatema, daughter of Abdul Haq. Fatema’s mother, Kulsuma Begum, and neighbour Jesmin Begum were injured and hospitalised in this incident.
According to locals, Kulsuma Begum was carrying the newborn along with Jesmin Begum when the wall suddenly fell on them.
Bhulta Police Outpost Inspector Mokhlesur Rahman stated, “A newborn named Fatema was killed when a wall collapsed during the earthquake. The child’s mother, Kulsum Begum, and neighbour Jasmine Begum were seriously injured.”
The earthquake, which struck at 10:38am with its epicenter at Madhabdi in Narsingdi—13 km from Dhaka—was felt across the capital and other regions, causing building damage and panic among residents.
