Earthquake felt in Dhaka, several other parts of country

An earthquake was felt in different parts of the country, including the capital Dhaka, on Tuesday night. Two tremors were felt after 9:30pm. Both earthquakes originated in Myanmar. Their magnitudes were recorded at 5.9 and 5.2 respectively on the Richter scale.

Sources at the Earthquake Observation Centre of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said the tremors were felt in many areas across the country.

According to the department, the first earthquake struck at 9:34:01pm Bangladesh time, with a magnitude of 5.9. A second tremor followed at 9:51pm, measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale.

The meteorological office said the epicentre of the first quake was in Mindu, Myanmar, about 521 kilometres from Dhaka. Efforts are under way to determine the distance of the second epicentre.

Officials added that the tremors were recorded at all stations of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
