Earthquake in Assam, tremors felt in northern Bangladesh

An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 struck the Indian state of Assam, with its effects felt in various districts of northern Bangladesh, according to locals.

The volcano and earthquake monitoring website Volcano Discovery reported that the earthquake struck at 2:40 pm local time on Saturday, May 9. Its epicenter was located in the South Salmara Mankachar area of Assam, approximately 34 kilometers from the town of Dhubri.

A report from the Alaska Earthquake Center indicates that a magnitude 3.6 earthquake is generally considered a light event that can often be felt but rarely causes damage . According to the report, the depth of the earthquake has not yet been determined, but it is believed to have been a shallow tremor. As a result, the shaking was felt more strongly over a wide area around the epicenter.

Residents of various areas in northern Bangladesh have reported feeling the tremors following the earthquake. However, no casualties or damage have been reported so far.
