Earthquake jolts Dhaka, multiple regions across country

An earthquake, with a magnitude of 5 on the Richter scale, was felt in multiple areas across the country, including the capital Dhaka and the northeastern city of Sylhet.


According to the Meteorological Department, the tremor was felt on Friday morning (January 3). The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Myanmar, which is near Bangladesh.

Rubayet Kabir, the officer-in-charge of the Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center of the Meteorological Department, said, "The earthquake was felt at 10:32 am today in Dhaka and other parts of the country. Its magnitude was 5 on the Richter scale."

"The epicenter of the earthquake was 482 kilometers away from Dhaka, in Myanmar. The tremor was felt in the capital, as well as in the northeastern region, including Sylhet and some nearby areas," he added.
