Earthquake: Over 50 injured in Narsingdi, fire engulfs Ghorashal Thermal Power Plant
A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Madhabdi in Narsingdi at 10:38am Friday (November 21), rattling Dhaka and several surrounding districts. Residents panicked and rushed outdoors during the brief tremor.
In Gabtoli of Narsingdi town, the wall of a six-storey under-construction building collapsed onto a single-storey house, injuring the owner, Delwar Hossain, his son Omar, and daughter Tasfia.
Locals rescued the family and took them to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital. Delwar Hossain and Omar were later sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
According to Dr. Gulshana Kabir, resident medical officer at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, more than 50 men and women have sought treatment for quake-related injuries, with additional patients still arriving.
Damage was also reported across six upazilas of the district.
The quake also sparked a fire at the substation of Ghorashal Thermal Power Plant in Palash upazila. Senior Station Officer Md. Abdul Shahid of Palash Fire Service confirmed the incident. Firefighters from two units quickly brought the fire under control.
The plant’s chief engineer, Md. Enamul Haque, said restoration of the affected electricity supply is underway.
