East Bengal Communist Party leader shot dead

Unidentified assailants have shot dead a leader of the East Bengal Communist Party, Nasimul Karim, also known as Nasim, in Khulna's Dighalia. The incident took place in front of the Fire Service in the Formaizkhana area of the upazila around 12pm on Sunday.

The deceased, Nasim, is the son of the late Abdur Gafur of the Formaizkhana area. Police said there are four murder cases and three cases under the Special Powers Act against him.

According to police and local sources, Nasim was drinking tea at a tea shop on Sunday morning. Later, when he left there for home, two people blocked his path in front of the Fire Service. At that time, they fired several rounds at Nasim. As he fell on the road after being shot, the attackers quickly fled the scene.

Later, locals rescued Nasim in a critically injured condition and took him to Khulna Medical College Hospital. The doctor on duty there declared him dead.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dighalia Police Station Howlader Sanwar Hossain Masum said three bullet shells, three live bullets, a pistol magazine and a pair of spectacles were recovered from the scene. However, it has not yet been confirmed who is involved in the killing. An investigation is underway to find out the cause of the killing and to identify those involved.
