EC bans political gatherings in educational institutions
The Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) has prohibited the use of educational institutions for election-related meetings, rallies, or campaigning, stating that no assembly will be allowed without prior permission from the returning officer.
The directive was issued in a letter from the Dhaka Divisional Commissioner’s office to the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) on Sunday (January 11).
The letter cites the upcoming 13th parliamentary elections and referendum scheduled for February 12 and stresses strict adherence to the election code of conduct.
It warns that some candidates or their associates have been attempting to mobilise voters through seminars, receptions, or youth gatherings, often using school and college grounds without approval. Such activities violate election rules.
Authorities have been instructed to ensure that no election-related gatherings take place in educational institutions without the returning officer’s explicit consent.
