EC calls for full authority during elections

The Election Commission (EC) has called for full authority during elections, citing that the law is often not enforced effectively.

The commission has recommended measures to ensure its officials face no obstruction or interference during electoral processes.

A delegation led by Election Commission Secretary Shafiul Azim shared these proposals during a discussion with the Electoral Reforms Commission at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon on Wednesday.

Speaking to the press, Secretary Shafiul Azim said: "The Constitution entrusts the Election Commission with ensuring public representation through free, fair, and impartial elections. However, certain weaknesses in the existing system have been identified. Interference during elections often hinders this process."

He emphasized the need for the EC to have unrestricted authority during elections, as mandated by the Constitution.

The EC also recommended measures to ensure media neutrality during elections, urging the media to provide unbiased coverage for fair outcomes.

Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar, head of the Electoral Reform Commission, acknowledged the EC's concerns, stating: "While the Constitution grants the Election Commission significant powers, including inherent authority affirmed by the courts, the real challenge lies in implementation."

He highlighted the need to strengthen laws and regulations, ensuring that field administration and law enforcement agencies can perform their duties more effectively.
