EC calls for NID to be mandatory for all jobs: NID Director General
The Election Commission (EC) thinks that the National Identity Card (NID) should be mandatory for all jobs, including government offices.
ASM Humayun Kabir, the Director General of the National Identity Registration Wing, shared this information during a press conference at the Election Commission building on Tuesday (June 3).
The NID Director General said, “Many government employees, whose salaries are processed through the Integrated Budget and Accounting System (IBAS), have experienced delays or stoppages because their NID details do not match the information provided during their employment. These employees approach the Election Commission to update their NID. If the NID had been required at the time of their hiring, they wouldn’t have encountered these issues. This is why we believe the NID should be mandatory for job applications.”
On Monday (June 2), the EC’s National Identity Registration Wing organized a meeting with officials from various government departments and agencies to address NID-related issues for employees.
Although NID is not legally required for jobs, institutions have been advised to prioritize NID and correct any discrepancies. Many individuals face difficulties in employment because their academic certificates do not match their NID details. Relevant organizations have been instructed to make the necessary corrections.
When asked about the progress on updating NID records, the Director General said, “Some updating work has been paused due to legal issues, but the process for new voter registration is continuing.”
