The Election Commission (EC) has extended the deadline for new voter registration from June 30 to July 31 to ensure citizens can vote in the upcoming election.

Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Mashud informed journalists at his office at the Election Building in Agargaon, capital, on Thursday, July 2.

He said officials have presented a plan to the commission regarding the schedule of various election-related activities. The commission has reviewed how long the voter list update work can be carried out according to that plan. Necessary changes have also been made to the voter list-related law, which will be published soon.

Mashud said the previous deadline for becoming a new voter was June 30. However, considering requests from concerned officials and the ground reality, the deadline has been extended to July 31. Those who register as voters within this period will be able to vote in the upcoming national election.

He further said concerned officials have assured the commission that if the election is held in October, there will be no problem in implementing this timeline. A list has also been prepared to determine the need for possible additional polling centres.
