The Election Commission (EC) on Friday decided to postpone the voting to Naogaon-2 constituency (Patnitola and Dhamoirhat) as independent candidate Aminul Haque, 80, died eight days before the 12th parliamentary polls slated for 7 January. Ashok Kumar Debnath, additional secretary of the EC, informed the matter in a press conference at the EC hours after the death of Aminul Haq. Aminul Haq was undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital. Aminul got his electoral symbol on Thursday after a High Court directive restored his candidacy. The EC additional secretary said, "The Returning officer decided to postpone voting to Naogaon-2 constituency as an independent candidate died. The EC will reschedule the voting in this constituency."

আসন্ন দ্বাদশ জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনে নওগাঁ-২ (পত্নীতলা ও ধামইরহাট) আসনের ভোট স্থগিত করা হয়েছে। পরে ওই আসনে ভোটের নতুন তারিখ ঘোষণা করা হবে বলে জানিয়েছে নির্বাচন কমিশন। নির্বাচন কমিশনের তথ্যমতে, শুক্রবার (২৯ ডিসেম্বর) ভোরে ঢাকার একটি বেসরকারি হাসপাতালে চিকিৎসাধীন অবস্থায় স্বতন্ত্র প্রার্থী আমিনুল হক (৮০) মারা যান। তার মৃত্যুর ঘটনায় এ আসনের ভোট স্থগিত করেছেন সংশ্লিষ্ট রিটার্নিং কর্মকর্তা। এ ব্যাপারে ইসির অতিরিক্ত সচিব অশোক কুমার দেবনাথ সংবাদমাধ্যমকে বলেন, নওগাঁ-২ আসনের স্বতন্ত্র প্রার্থী মারা গেছেন। এ কারণে এখানে ভোট স্থগিত করেছেন রিটার্নিং কর্মকর্তা। কমিশন বসে পরবর্তী সময়ে এ আসনের তফসিল ঘোষণা করা হবে।
