EC publishes gazette of 297 elected MPs
The Election Commission (EC) has published the official gazette notification listing 297 elected members of parliament from the 13th National Parliament election.
The gazette, signed by EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed, was issued late Friday night following the announcement of final results earlier in the day.
The Election Commission also released a gazzette of the referendum results last night. According to the official gazette, 48,266,000 voters cast a “Yes” vote, while 22,071,726 voted “No.” A total of 7,422,637 ballot papers were rejected in the referendum.
Voting for the parliamentary election and a national referendum on constitutional reforms was held nationwide on Thursday in what authorities described as a festive atmosphere.
The EC announced final results for 297 constituencies on Friday afternoon and completed the formalities before publishing the gazette at night.
Election Commissioner Rahmanel Masud told reporters that the Commission has not decided to recount votes in the Dhaka-8 constituency. Aggrieved candidates may seek remedy through an election tribunal, he added.
The EC said that although voting was scheduled in 299 of the 300 constituencies, results in several seats were withheld due to legal complications and the death of a candidate. Following scrutiny, results for 297 seats were officially gazetted. Newly elected lawmakers are expected to be sworn in within three days of the gazette publication.
According to the EC, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured 212 seats, while Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami won 77 seats. The National Citizens Party (NCP) gained seven seats, with the remaining seats going to independent and other party candidates.
