The Election Commission (EC) will allocate an election symbol to the National Citizen Party (NCP) if it fails to select one from the EC’s approved list, EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said on Monday (October 27).

Speaking at a press briefing at Nirbachan Bhaban, he said there was no alternative proposal on the matter, and the EC would act according to its earlier stance.

Responding to queries about the NCP’s request for the ‘Water Lily’ symbol, he said a public notification will soon list registered political parties and their allocated symbols.

Akhtar Ahmed added that 90–95% of the EC’s electoral roadmap has been implemented, with only two tasks pending — registration of political parties and election observer organisations — which are expected to be completed this week.

He said 22 parties have been identified as potentially eligible for registration and field verification is underway.

Regarding a possible referendum, the EC official said the Commission has not received any formal proposal or information on the issue.
