EC will be asked to hold elections in February: Chief Adviser
A letter will be sent to the Election Commission (EC) to hold the next national elections in February 2026, said Chief Adviser to the interim government Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
He made the announcement while addressing the nation on Tuesday (August 5) night.
The Chief Adviser said: “The last duty we have to fulfill is to hold elections. After delivering this speech before you on this great day today, we will enter our most important chapter—the process of handing over responsibility to an elected government.”
He said: “On behalf of the interim government, I will write a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner so that the Election Commission holds national elections in February 2026, before the next Ramadan.”
At the same time, he called on the countrymen, saying: “All of you should pray that by holding elections in a beautiful manner, all the citizens of this country can successfully move forward in building a ‘New Bangladesh’. We, on behalf of the government, will extend all possible cooperation to make these elections fair, peaceful and festive.”
“We will start mental preparation and institutional arrangements from tomorrow so that this year’s election is memorable in the country’s history in terms of joy and celebration, peace and order, voter turnout, and mutual cordiality," he added.
