Echoes of 1/11 being heard again: Adviser Mahfuz
Information Adviser Mahfuz Alam has said that the echoes of 1/11 are being heard once again in the country. He made the remark in a Facebook post at 6:40 PM on Monday (August 4).
In the same post, he added, “However, July will prevail. The people’s struggle will not be defeated.”
Mahfuz Alam’s comment has already sparked widespread curiosity on social media, with users reacting in various ways in the comments section of his post.
The term “1/11” refers to January 11, 2007, a pivotal moment in Bangladesh's political history. Amid mounting political violence triggered by a movement over the appointment of the head of the caretaker government to oversee national elections, a state of emergency was declared on that date. This period later became widely known as “One-Eleven” or “1/11.”
On that day, following demands from the Awami League and its allies, then-President Iajuddin Ahmed stepped down from his role as Chief Adviser and declared a state of emergency. At the same time, the scheduled January 22 election was canceled.
Subsequently, a military-backed caretaker government assumed power, led by former Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed. During that period, General Moeen U Ahmed served as the army chief.
