The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested prominent economist and former Janata Bank chairman Professor Abul Barkat late Thursday night in connection with a major corruption case. He was arrested from his residence on Road No. 3 in the capital's Dhanmondi area around 11:30pm, according to DB Joint Commissioner (South) Mohammad Nasirul Islam. The arrest follows a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on February 20 against 23 individuals, including former Bangladesh Bank governor Dr Atiur Rahman and Professor Barkat. The case alleges the embezzlement of approximately Tk 297 crore. Authorities have not yet released further details about the charges or the progress of the investigation.

প্রখ্যাত অর্থনীতিবিদ ও জনতা ব্যাংকের সাবেক চেয়ারম্যান অধ্যাপক আবুল বারকাতকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়েছে। বৃহস্পতিবার (১০ জুলাই) রাতে দুর্নীতির মামলায় তাকে গ্রেপ্তার করে ঢাকা মহানগর পুলিশের (ডিএমপি) গোয়েন্দা শাখার (ডিবি) সদস্যরা। এ ব্যাপারে ডিবির দক্ষিণ বিভাগের যুগ্ম কমিশনার মোহাম্মদ নাসিরুল ইসলাম জানান, গতকাল রাত সাড়ে ১১টায় রাজধানীর ধানমন্ডির ৩ নম্বর রোডের তার নিজ বাসা থেকে তাকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়। জানা গেছে, দুর্নীতি দমন কমিশনের (দুদক) দায়ের করা একটি মামলায় অর্থনীতিবিদ আবুল বারকাতকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়েছে। এটি চলতি বছরের ২০ ফেব্রুয়ারি দায়ের করা হয়। মামলাটিতে অধ্যাপক বারকাতসহ মোট ২৩ জনকে আসামি করা হয়, যার মধ্যে বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের সাবেক গভর্নর ড. আতিউর রহমানের নামও রয়েছে। অভিযোগ অনুযায়ী, মামলাটিতে প্রায় ২৯৭ কোটি টাকা আত্মসাতের কথা বলা হয়েছে। তবে সংশ্লিষ্ট কর্তৃপক্ষ এখনও অভিযোগের বিষয়ে বা তদন্তের অগ্রগতি সম্পর্কে বিস্তারিত তথ্য প্রকাশ করেনি।
