Renowned economist and former Chairman of Janata Bank, Professor Dr. Abul Barkat, has been sent to jail in connection with a corruption case. On Friday (July 11), following a hearing on a three-day remand petition, the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court ordered his detention without granting the remand. Earlier, on Thursday night around 11:30 PM, he was arrested from his residence in the Dhanmondi area of the capital. Mohammad Nasirul Islam, Joint Commissioner (South) of the Detective Branch (DB), confirmed the matter to the media. On February 20, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against 23 individuals, including Dr. Barkat, accusing them of embezzling Tk 297 crore.

দুর্নীতির মামলায় অর্থনীতিবিদ ও জনতা ব্যাংকের সাবেক চেয়ারম্যান প্রফেসর ড. আবুল বারকাতকে কারাগারে পাঠানো হয়েছে। শুক্রবার (১১ জুলাই) তিন দিনের রিমান্ড আবেদনের শুনানি শেষে আদেশ না দিয়ে কারাগারে পাঠানোর নির্দেশ দেন ঢাকার মেট্রোপলিটন ম্যাজিস্ট্রেট আদালত। এর আগে বৃহস্পতিবার রাত সাড়ে ১১টার দিকে রাজধানীর ধানমন্ডি এলাকার নিজ বাসা থেকে তাকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়। ডিবির যুগ্ম কমিশনার (দক্ষিণ) মোহাম্মদ নাসিরুল ইসলাম গণমাধ্যমকে বিষয়টি নিশ্চিত করেন। গত ২০ ফেব্রুয়ারি ২৩ জনের বিরুদ্ধে একটি মামলা করে দুর্নীতি দমন কমিশন (দুদক)। মামলায় তাদের বিরুদ্ধে ২৯৭ কোটি টাকা আত্মসাতের অভিযোগ আনা হয়েছে।
