Editors' Council condemns Jamaat attack on journalists in Dhanmondi
The Editors' Council has strongly condemned and protested the attack and harassment of journalists during a rally held after a Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami procession in the capital's Dhanmondi 32 area. The organization stated that such attacks on journalists while performing their professional duties go against the freedom of the media, the right to collect news, and the freedom of expression.
The condemnation was issued in a statement, signed by the Editors' Council President Nurul Kabir and General Secretary Dewan Hanif Mahmud on Thursday.
The statement noted that on June 23, journalists were attacked and harassed while covering a political program of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Dhaka Metropolitan South unit in the Dhanmondi area of Dhaka. The Editors' Council expressed deep concern alongside its strong condemnation and protest regarding the incident.
The statement further added that although the political party concerned termed the incident a "misunderstanding" and assured an investigation, there is no justification or acceptability for attacking journalists who are performing their professional duties.
The Editors' Council has demanded a swift, impartial, and credible investigation into the incident to identify the culprits and ensure exemplary punishment. Additionally, the organization called upon the relevant authorities to ensure that journalists can perform their professional duties in a safe and fearless environment.
