Effigies with photos of Nahid, Hasnat, Sarjis hung in Meherpur

Several effigies bearing photos of top leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP) were found hanging from electrical wires in Gangni, Meherpur. Locals spotted them on Monday morning near Gangni Pilot Secondary School, the Muktijoddha Sangsad building and the Rural Electricity Office. Police later recovered the effigies from the scene.

The effigies featured photos of NCP leaders Nahid Islam, Hasnat Abdullah, Sarjis Alam and several others. Slogans such as "The youth society has been handed lollipops, the country has been ruined" and "Oppose them, hate them" were also written on them.

An NCP rally and street meeting was scheduled for Monday afternoon at the Gangni bus stand. Advocate Shakil Ahmed, the party's central joint coordinator and Meherpur district coordinator, said a group of miscreants carried out the act to disrupt the expected public gathering and spread fear among people. He also said law enforcement agencies are taking the matter seriously.

Gangni Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohaddid Murshed Chowdhury said it is initially believed that the effigies were hung with the intention of spreading panic. An investigation is underway to identify those involved.
