Egg, fish and chicken prices rise in Dhaka markets

Prices of eggs, fish and chicken have remained high in Dhaka markets, while flour and sugar have also become more expensive. Vegetable prices, however, have eased somewhat as supplies increased.

A visit to markets in Karwan Bazar, Badda and Mohakhali on Friday (September 4) found that a dozen eggs were selling for Tk 150 or more, up from Tk 130-140 about a month ago.

Fish prices have also remained elevated. Tilapia was selling at Tk 250-260 per kg, pangas at Tk 230-250, and rui and katla at Tk 380-420. Shrimp prices ranged from Tk 1,000 to Tk 1,300 per kg depending on variety.

Hilsa weighing between 900g and 1kg was being sold for Tk 2,250-2,600 per kg.

Chicken prices have also risen, with broilers selling at Tk 180-200 per kg and Sonali chicken at Tk 300-350. Beef was priced at Tk 800-850 per kg.

Flour and sugar prices have increased as well. A 2kg packet of flour was selling for Tk 130, while loose flour cost Tk 50 per kg, up from Tk 45 a month earlier. Sugar was selling for Tk 120-125 per kg, compared with around Tk 110 previously.

Vegetable prices, meanwhile, offered some relief to consumers. Traders said increased supplies had pushed down prices of most vegetables, which were selling for Tk 50-80 per kg. Onions were priced at Tk 50-55 per kg and potatoes at Tk 25-30.
