Holiday travel ahead of Eid-ul-Azha caused severe traffic congestion on the Dhaka-Tangail-Jamuna Bridge highway Friday morning (June 6), with vehicles crawling along a 25-kilometer stretch and passengers facing hours of delays.

Thousands of people began leaving the capital for their hometowns to celebrate Eid with their families, leading to a massive buildup of traffic. From early morning, long lines of vehicles were seen on the highway, with many stranded in standstill traffic. Passengers, including the elderly and children, have been particularly affected by the sweltering heat and lack of movement.

Commuters and transport workers reported that traffic jams had persisted since Thursday, with the situation worsening overnight due to multiple vehicle breakdowns at different points along the highway.

Sharif, in-charge of the Elenga Highway Outpost, confirmed that several buses had broken down, contributing to the disruption. "The army and police are working together to clear the congestion," he said. "We expect the traffic to return to normal soon."

Elsewhere, traffic delays were also reported on other key routes out of Dhaka. A 5-kilometer tailback stretched from Board Bazar in Gazipur to Chandana Chowrasta, while vehicles were stuck in long queues from Mouchak to Chandra More, with intermittent congestion throughout.
