Eid-ul-Azha being celebrated in several districts in line with Middle East
Thousands of Muslims across several districts in Bangladesh celebrated Eid-ul-Azha on Wednesday (May 27), aligning the festival with Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries.
Special Eid congregations were held in hundreds of villages across Narayanganj, Patuakhali, Chandpur, Chattogram and Dinajpur, where devotees observed the festival following local religious traditions and Middle East moon-sighting practices.
In Narayanganj’s Sonargaon upazila, Eid prayers were held in 23 villages, including the main congregation at Girdan Paschimpara Jame Mosque in the Banglabazar area of Sanmandi union. Locals said they have been observing Eid in line with Saudi Arabia for nearly a decade.
Meanwhile, around 25,000 people from at least 35 villages in four upazilas of Patuakhali celebrated Eid following a 98-year-old tradition. The main congregation was held at Badrpur Darbar Sharif Jame Mosque in the district সদর area. Residents said the custom of observing Ramadan and Eid based on international moon sightings has continued there since 1928.
In Chandpur, followers of the late Maulana Ishaq also celebrated Eid in more than 50 villages. Despite adverse weather, two Eid congregations were held at Sadra Darbar Sharif in Hajiganj upazila.
Similar celebrations were reported in over a hundred villages in Chattogram, where followers of Mirzakheel Darbar Sharif in Satkania have long observed Eid in line with Saudi Arabia. Eid prayers and animal sacrifices were carried out in several upazilas across the district.
In Dinajpur, advance Eid congregations were also held in nearly 50 locations across multiple upazilas, with thousands of worshippers participating in the celebrations.
Following the prayers, devotees offered special prayers seeking peace, prosperity and wellbeing for the country, the nation and the global Muslim community. Many also performed animal sacrifices as part of the Eid-ul-Azha rituals.
