The administration of Gono Bishwabidyalay (GB) in Savar has temporarily suspended eight students of the Law Department following allegations of physical and mental abuse of a fellow student late at night in a campus mess.

The decision was announced through a notification, signed by the university registrar, Md. Ohiduzzaman, on Wednesday (November 26).

The suspended students include Antu Dewan and Torikul Islam of the 27th batch, Mehedi Hasan and Asif Rahman (Labib) of the 28th batch, Asadur Rahman, Ashraful Islam, Nayeem, and Mehedi of the 32nd batch.

Konok Chandra Roy, secretary of the Proctorial Body, said that after learning of the incident, two investigation committees were formed—one with Law Department faculty and another with members of the Proctorial Body. Based on the preliminary report of the departmental committee, the eight students were temporarily suspended.

The Proctorial Body’s committee is expected to submit its final report within three working days, after which the case will be referred to the Syndicate via the Disciplinary Committee for a final decision, he said.

According to the suspension notice, the accused have been provisionally found guilty of ragging and brutal abuse of the victim, Sher Ali, and will not be allowed to participate in any university activities during the suspension period.

The incident took place late Monday night in a mess in Nalam area under Pathalia Union of Savar. Victim Sher Ali, a resident at Mahmudpur under Pirganj of Rangpur, resides in a mess in Ashulia. On Wednesday morning, fellow students protested on campus demanding justice, joined later by Sher Ali and his father.

The university administration held a meeting with GOCSU representatives at noon. In the afternoon, 25–30 supporters of accused Antu Dewan protested, claiming the allegations were false. Around 4:15pm, Vice-Chancellor Professor Md. Abul Hossain officially informed students of the temporary suspension of the eight accused.
