Eighth-grader hospitalised after teacher's kicks, cane blows for failing to read lesson
An eighth-grade student has been hospitalised with serious injuries after allegedly being beaten by a teacher for failing to read a lesson at Bagduli High School in Pangsha upazila, Rajbari. The incident occurred around 11:30 am on Tuesday, May 12.
According to the allegation, Social Science teacher Md Ahad Hossain first beat the student with a cane for not being able to read his lesson. Classmates alleged that the teacher then threw the student on the classroom floor and kicked him repeatedly.
The injured student, hailing from Maurat union in the upazila, was taken to Pangsha Upazila Health Complex by his classmates.
When the news spread, local guardians and residents gathered at the school, protesting and demanding punishment for the accused teacher. As the situation escalated, the school authorities locked the teacher in the library room for his own safety.
Head teacher Md Abdul Khalek said the accused teacher has been served a show-cause notice and asked to reply within three working days. He has also been barred from all school activities until an investigation is concluded.
Locals said physical abuse of students under the guise of discipline continues in many educational institutions, causing serious harm to children's mental and physical health. Parents have demanded swift administrative action in this case.
