A 60-year-old man has died following a beating over Tk 1,000 in overdue house rent at the Azimpur Medical Staff Quarter in Lalbagh, capital. Police have detained two people in connection with the incident.

The victim, Md Swapan, was a cosmetics trader. The incident occurred early Monday, July 13. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead.

The victim's brother, Raja Mohammad Selim, said the landlord Rizvi used to pressure them for rent before the month ended. Only Tk 1,000 was outstanding this month. When they requested a day or two, Rizvi became abusive and threatened them.

At around 4:00 am, Rizvi and his cousin Rohan came to the room and argued over the rent. They pushed Selim down and beat Swapan, dragging him to an open field. Swapan was critically injured and later died at hospital.

DMCH police camp in-charge Inspector Md Faruk confirmed the death. The body has been kept at the hospital morgue.
