Elderly man gets 7 years in jail for attempting to rape child in Faridpur
A court in Faridpur's Madhukhali has sentenced an elderly man, Md Hakim Biswas (58), to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for attempting to rape a six-year-old girl. He was also fined Tk 20,000, and in default, he will have to serve an additional three months of simple imprisonment.
Judge Shamima Parveen of Faridpur's Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal (District and Sessions Judge) delivered the verdict on Thursday, August 13. The accused was present in court when the verdict was announced. After the verdict, he was taken to Faridpur District Jail under police custody.
Hakim Biswas is a resident of a village in Madhukhali upazila, Faridpur, and was a neighbour of the victim.
According to the case's first information report (FIR), on August 2, 2018, the victim's mother left her six-year-old daughter at her in-laws' house to attend to personal work at Madhukhali market. When she returned home around 4pm, she learned that her neighbour Hakim had sexually assaulted her daughter.
The following day, August 3, the victim's mother filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at Madhukhali Police Station, naming Hakim as the sole accused. The case was investigated by SI Palash Kumar Das of Madhukhali Police Station. He submitted the charge sheet to the court on May 1, 2019.
Confirming the incident, Government Counsel (PP) Golam Rabbani Bhuiyan of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal said they are satisfied with the verdict.
