Elderly woman hammered, gold chain snatched

A man has been accused of entering a flat in the North Shewta area of Manikganj town disguised as a beggar, hammering an elderly woman and snatching her gold chain. The woman, identified as Hazera Begum, 70, was injured in the incident. She has been admitted to Manikganj General Hospital.

The incident took place in a flat on the second floor of Baitul Aman building in the North Shewta area of the municipality around 11:30am on Thursday.

Hazera Begum's daughter, Aleya Begum, said that around 11:30am, a person wearing a burqa came to their flat's gate and knocked on the door. When her mother opened the door, the person suddenly hit her on the head repeatedly with a hammer he was carrying. He then fled with the gold chain from her mother's neck.

Aleya said the person had a poly bag in his hand containing a small amount of rice. For this reason, he was thought to be a beggar. However, he attacked the elderly woman as soon as the door was opened.

After the attack, Hazera Begum screamed, and people from the neighbouring flat rushed in and found her lying on the floor of the room. Later, upon receiving the news, Aleya went home, rescued her mother and admitted her to Manikganj General Hospital. Hazera Begum was alone in the flat at the time of the incident.

Manikganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Monir Hossain said reports were received that a man entered a flat in the North Shewta area, hit a woman with a hammer and snatched her gold chain. Upon receiving the news, police went to the scene and investigated the matter.
