An unidentified elderly woman, aged around 75, was killed after being run over by a private car in front of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) early Thursday (April 16), police said.

The accident took place around 4:00am near the emergency gate area of the hospital.

Car owner Kamran Molla said he had arrived at DMCH from Badda with a patient when the incident took place. As the vehicle entered through the emergency gate, the driver reportedly did not notice the woman lying on the road near the police camp, assuming it was an empty sack placed on the ground.

He said the vehicle, which was carrying a critical patient, ran over the woman before the driver realised what had happened. The car was immediately stopped and the woman was rushed to the emergency department.

She died while undergoing treatment at around 5:30am, hospital sources said.

Inspector Md. Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police camp, said the deceased was a homeless woman who used to sleep near the area wrapped in sacks at night.

Following the incident, driver Alam was handed over to Shahbagh Police Station for further legal procedures, police said.
