BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today hoped that national elections will be held soon on the basis of consensus on reforms after joining a meeting with the National Consensus Commission at the Foreign Service Academy auditorium in the capital.

Representatives of 26 political parties, including BNP and Jamaat, participated in the meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus in the chair, reports BSS.

"We hope a minimum consensus will be reached on this reform very soon and national elections will be held quickly based on the consensus," he told reporters in front of Jamuna.

Fakhrul said Chief Adviser Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus in the meeting informed the political parties that each of the reports submitted by the reform commissions will be discussed with political parties and an attempt will be made to reach a consensus.

When asked about the national election or local government elections, Mirza Fakhrul said, "We have clearly said that the national elections must be held first. Then the local government elections will be held."

In response to another question, he said, "Today, only preliminary discussions were held. It can be said that the discussion was introductory. Different political parties said different things, which were their own opinions."

Mirza Fakhrul led a six-member delegation of BNP joined the meeting. The delegation members were Barrister Zamir Uddin Sircar, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Salahuddin Ahmed and major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed.
