Elections unlikely to be held soon: Rumin Farhana
BNP’s Joint Secretary for International Affairs, Rumeen Farhana, has stated that there is little likelihood of elections being held in the country in the near future.
Speaking on a private television talk show, she described BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman as a “major obstacle” for those who do not want an elected government or a stable political environment.
Farhana emphasised that Tarique’s role goes beyond being a party leader, noting that the future of Bangladesh’s progressive and democratic politics depends on his active participation. "His return is not just a personal decision but one that could significantly influence the country’s political trajectory and the fate of its citizens," she said.
She also highlighted the government’s responsibility to ensure citizens’ safety, warning that any threat to Tarique’s security would be the government’s responsibility.
Farhana further questioned whether the government truly intends a democratic transition, pointing to repeated delays in announcing the election schedule and uncertainty over the February polls.
Commenting on the political climate, she noted the absence of the usual pre-election vibrancy, describing the current situation as largely inactive. Political analysts, she said, also see a very low probability of elections in February, a view she personally shares.
