Electricity from Nepal not coming to Bangladesh for 12 days

Electricity supply from Nepal to Bangladesh has been completely halted for the past 12 days due to damage to several hydropower plants in Nepal caused by floods.

The information was seen on the website of Power Grid Bangladesh PLC on Monday afternoon, September 7.

Earlier, on August 27, 40 MW of electricity was supplied from Nepal to Bangladesh during the day-peak hour. However, no electricity came during the evening peak hour that day. Since then, power supply from Nepal has remained suspended.

Earlier, the Kathmandu Post had reported that Nepal's electricity exports to Bangladesh had stopped through India's transmission system. The situation arose due to the closure of several hydropower projects in Nepal following devastating floods in the Bhote Koshi river area on August 26.

During the monsoon season, Nepal was exporting around 1,000 MW of electricity on average. After the floods, the country's electricity exports have dropped to around 650 MW.

Two of Nepal's hydropower plants, which had received approval to supply electricity to Bangladesh, have also been damaged by the floods. These plants are the 22.1 MW Chilime Hydropower Project and the 24 MW Trishuli Hydropower Project. Power generation at both projects has remained suspended since last week.

Nepal, which has long relied on electricity imports during the dry season, is now trying to establish itself as a regional electricity exporter. However, the recent floods have severely disrupted the country's power generation and export activities.
